General information about Belfort

The Belfry of Ypres is one in a long line of 56 Flemish Belfries recognized by UNESCO as World Heritage Sites. This impressive tower rises over the Ypres Cloth Halls. If you want to climb the 70-meter tower, you can do so by buying an extra ticket when you visit the In Flanders Fields Museum visit. Admission to this Museum is free for Ypres residents and 12 EUR for others. If you want to climb the Belfry(231 steps!) then you have to pay an additional 2 EUR (bit of a shame anyway). On the way up, you first encounter 2 large rooms: in the first one you see an old clock mechanism and in a large room above you see the carillon. The carillon culture was also protected by UNESCO. Once you get to the top, all around the tower you have a rather narrow ledge. From this ledge you have a beautiful view of the Heuvelland, the industrial area of Ypres but also, for example, the beautiful St. Martin's Cathedral.

Tip 1: It is best not to have a fear of heights (vertigo), nor claustrophobia (fear of confined spaces).

Tip 2:Good general fitnessis required. There are 231 steps to do. People who have difficulty walking or people with strollers unfortunately cannot go up, as there is no elevator.

Tip 3: You can visit many wonderful attractions in Ypres. For example, in the same building of the Belfry is the world-renowned In Flanders Fields Museum (about World War I in the West Flanders front region) and also the lesser known but no less interesting "Ypres Museum". Tip 4: If you want to see something truly original, go take a look at Saint George's Memorial Church. It is located just before the cathedral on the other side of Vandenpeereboom Square. For us a "topper." Small & fine, warm.

Folklore: cat throwing from the Belfry Tower

Whenever there is Cat Parade, invariably around 6 p.m. the town jester throws down (plush) cats. The intention is for these to be collected by the crowds on the Grote Markt of Ypres.
