General information about Chapel of Our Lady of Mercy
The Chapel of Our Lady of Mercy in Izenberge is officially called "Chapel of Our Lady of Mercy." It is a pilgrimage chapel. It dates from 1653. The adjoining sacristy dates from 1863. The interior dates from the second half of the 18th century (1772-1774). The style, classicist, has an Austrian or German feel to it. It is a gem that you absolutely must see: small but special.
Why exactly did people come on pilgrimage to Izenberge?
In Izenberge, there was a special statue of Mary from early times (the Middle Ages) that was considered locally to have protective and healing powers. In the pilgrimage tradition, it is not the place itself but the statue that is the reason for the pilgrimage. Once such a statue gains a reputation, the location becomes sacred. In summary:
- Regional appeal: Its fame extended beyond the village itself, attracting people from far and wide to Izenberge.
- Miracle stories: According to tradition, miraculous healings occurred after prayers to Mary, especially for eye diseases and other ailments.
- Devotion to Mary: In a period of war, poverty, and disease (16th–17th centuries), people sought comfort and protection from Mary.
- Sacred image & chapel: The statue of Mary in the church became the center of worship; pilgrims brought offerings and prayed for healing.
