General information about SNCF Station Lens

The SNCF Station Lens is the only station in Hauts-de-France that was entirely built in art deco style . It was finished in 1927 and is about 86 m long and 17 m deep in the central section. The shape of the building was inspired by an old locomotive. The building was specially kept low to reduce risks associated with possible landslides given the coal-mining activity underground.

Along the 4 sides of the departure hall there are very large mosaics. They bring both regional subjects (the coal mines with its slag heaps and mining trestles) and industrial ones (railroads, for example).

There is striking red-painted ironwork. The ceiling of the departure hall consists of a concrete truss with thousands of glass tiles. A beautiful ensemble well worth a visit.

In addition to the departure hall, there is also a 23-meter tower with clockwork.

The northern French town of Lens was all but destroyed in World War I: 90% was destroyed. Afterwards, very much was rebuilt, including some Art Deco-style buildings.

Visitor tips SNCF Station Lens

General tips:
1) if you are looking for other nearby attractions, consult our Tourist map of Top.Vlaanderen.
2) You can consult our overview lists: by category ( e.g. timeline, size, ...) or by region
3) You can also always consult tourist services: see our overview of tourist services

Tip 1: If you want to have an original lunch, go inside the IBIS Hotel right across from the train station. There you have a very highly rated boulette restaurant "Show Boulette". Original, tasty and not too expensive.

Tip 2: If you're in Lens, there's a good chance you'll see the Louvre-Lens Museum. The general gallery there is free to visit. There are also temporary exhibitions (such as "Gothiques" which runs until the end of January 2026). These temporary exhibitionsdo haveto be paid for.

Tip 3: If you like architecture in general, and art deco in particular, walk into the Tourist Office (Place Jean Jaurès). There you can get a booklet "Parcours Architectures du Centre-Ville Lens" with a map listing all the interesting buildings. It is free and also extremely practical. There is a lot to see in Lens in terms of art deco, but do not expect too much. It is clear that they are trying to sell Lens as an "art deco product", but it still needs some work. Anyway, there are some nice facades here and there (see pictures below). Highlights are of course the station, the former "Les Grands Bureaux de la Société des Mines" (which can only be visited exceptionally - the park is always freely accessible), "La Ville de Limoges" (where the Tourist Office is located) and the facade of the bakery/patisserie "Jeanson", both at Place Jean Jaurès.

Tip 4: If you have just about had enough of Lens, you can travel on to the beautiful city of Arras. This is about 20 kilometers from Lens, well worth the trip.
