General information about Ten Putte Abbey
The Community of the Mother of Peace is based at Ten Putte Abbey. They venerate Saint Godelieve and it is a very popular place of pilgrimage. There are several Saint Godelieve chapels on the grounds, as well as a Godelieve museum and a prison. The abbey is said to date back to the 12th century.
Ten Putte Abbey is a serene and historic place, and, as mentioned above, closely linked to the poignant story of Saint Godelieve. In the 11th century, she was murdered here after a life full of humiliation and violence. She was strangled with a cloth (scarf). On July 30, 1084, Godelieve van Gistel was canonized by the Bishop of Tournai, Radbod II. She became the patron saint of, among others, abused women and people in hopeless marriages — her story was seen as one of steadfastness and innocence in the face of violence.
According to legend, the Godelieve well, whose water is said to have healing powers, sprang up at this spot. The year 1634 on the well does not refer to the life or death of Godelieve herself, but to the reconstruction of the Godelieve well in the 17th century. In that year, the spring was given its current stone form, presumably by the Norbertines of Ten Putte Abbey. The well and the accompanying place of worship were then officially set up for pilgrims, in a place that had been associated with Saint Godelieve for centuries.
Today, Ten Putte invites visitors to slow down and reflect on centuries-old stories, faith, and tranquility.

Tip 1: The abbey is located at the end of a street. You cannot drive any further. There is a relatively large parking lot there. Use this free parking lot.
Tip 2: There is also a cafeteria: the "Godelievezaal." During the winter months, it is only open on Sunday afternoons. Please consult their website for the latest information on opening hours.
Tip 3: At first glance, especially in the winter months, you might get the impression that the estate is closed (even though the large reddish-brown gate is wide open). However, nothing is what it seems: it is simply a quiet place. Just walk through the large gate and explore the various chapels and the large chapel.
Tip 4: The actual monastery building is neatly hidden behind the white-painted buildings that you see as a general visitor in the courtyard. The monastery itself is therefore not visible.
Tip 5: There are other places of pilgrimage that specifically venerate Saint Godelieve. In our region, for example, you will find the Chapel of Saint Godelieve (Wierre-Effroy, France). You may be wondering, "What does Wierre-Effroy have to do with Saint Godelieve?" Well, it was her birthplace. 😉
Tip 6: Every year, on the first Sunday after July 6, the Saint Godelieve procession takes place in Gistel. This procession has been held since 1459. In 2017, the Godelieve procession was recognized as Intangible Cultural Heritage by the Flemish Government.
