General information about Pointe de la Crèche

Pointe de la Crèche is a cliff located at the entrance to the port of Bouloge-sur-Mer. There was once an old defensive bastion "Fort de Terlincthum" built by order of Napoleon Bonaparte. It dated from the early 19th century (1806-1808). You cannot see anything of this bastion now, it has long since disappeared into the sea.

At the bottom of the cliff you can see a very long stone wall that goes far into the sea. It is a structure that the Germans built in World War II to protect the cape. After all, heavy bunkers were installed there, so everything had to be stabilized and stay there. This wall had to face tides and storm waves, which is why it was built so thick, heavy and strong. And because building such a heavy wall required huge amounts of concrete, steel and stones, the Germans laid a temporary railroad(Feldbahn or Decauville railroad). You can still see the remnants of that, too.

The beach and meadow area has now become a nature park. Periodically highland and/or Shetland ponies, donkeys, etc. graze there in defined areas. When we were there in October 2025, this was a herd of colorful donkeys. Here and there you will also find remnants of bunkers. It is on one such remnant that an observation platform was installed. Indications are given on the ground of what you can see in which direction: Wimereux, Fort d'Ambleteuse, and so on.

Note that during an entire period of the year(between January 1 and August 31 more specifically) certain activities are prohibited in this nature reserve.

You can explore this area on your own, albeit with some warnings: in some places it is downright dangerous and it was recently decided that you will not be allowed to use the large staircase that allows you to descend to the very large beach (at low tide anyway). Read more about it in the tips below.

On this site, on the opposite side of the D940, a veritable fortress was also built by the Germans in World War II. It can be said that a new fort(barracks with casemates) had already been built in 1879 to defend the port of Boulogne-sur-Mer. The Germans further expanded the site in World War II. There are imposing bunkers there (usually called "Blockhaus" precisely because of their German origin) in which large cannons were installed. It was part of the so-called "Atlantic Wall." You can go visit this fortress on well-defined days. It is kept open by a group of volunteers united as "Association Fort de la Crèche" (abbreviated as AFLC).

So when you say you went to "Pointe de la Crèche" you will have to say what exactly you meant:
1) the beach itself (the lowest part that floods at high tide -with its defense wall / dike / breakwater that in principle always remains above water), or
2) the nature reserve "Pointe de la Crèche" (with its own observation platform, hiking trail, grazing donkeys, ...), or
3) the Fort de la Crèche (the bunker complex across the road, at the highest point thus).
See our explanatory photo below.

Did you know that... the cape "Pointe de la Crèche" is actually located in two municipalities?
This is the best way to remember:
- Boulogne-sur-Mer = the military and historical part (the former coastal battery, bunkers, retaining wall).
- Wimereux = the natural and tourist part (the summits, hiking trail, viewpoint).

Tip 2: It is a location that gives a lot of opportunities photographically. Feel free to bring "full gear": panoramic views, bunkers, harbor, ships... .

Tip 3: This site is along the hiking trail "GR120 Littoral": you can hike on to either the seaside resort Wimereux or the fishing port town of Boulogne-sur-Mer.

Tip 4: You are very close here to the high Napoleon monument in Wimille. Did you know you can climb that one? You have a magnificent panorama from there over the entire city of Boulogne-sur-Mer.

Tip 5: Also nearby: the picturesque waterfall of the Valley of the "Old acker".
