General information about Kalmthoutse Heide in bloom

Every year between mid-August and mid-September, the Kalmthoutse heath is in bloom. That's when you see literally thousands of purple-pink flowers popping up on the Kempen sandy soil. A spectacle that tens of thousands of people go to admire every year. This park borders the Dutch border, west of Kalmthout. Hence it is also called the "Border Park". The "Grenspark Kalmthoutse Heide" is part of the Natura-2000 network that protects the most important natural areas throughout Europe in a sustainable way.

In this park you will find not only the typical moorland vegetation but also small wetlands. Such a small lake is called a fen. The pink-purple flower that blooms at this time of year is the heather(Calluna vulgaris). By the way, did you know that sheep like cows help to maintain the heather? You can interact with them in certain fenced areas in the park.

Visitor tips

Tip 1: On summer days, the Kempen sandy soils can get particularly hot. These areas are always among the hottest in Belgium when there is a heat wave, for example. Keep in mind that depending on the hike you choose, you will have to walk for an hour or much longer in the sun. There are some trees here and there (mainly birch, oak and spruce here and there) that can provide shelter, but still. Provide yourself with sunscreen, headgear and plenty of drink.

Tip 2: A good starting point is the parking lot on Putsesteenweg. On sunny days (especially during the flowering period of the heather) the parking quickly fills up. You may then have to park your car some distance away. Keep that in mind. The advantage of this parking lot is that there are some facilities: not only is there the Tourist Office "Visit Kalmthout" which has an extensive infrastructure there, but there is also the regional office of the Agency for Nature and Forest. You will find "De Vroente," a sustainable education point. At the Tourist Office ""Visit Kalmthout"" you can get a plan/walking map of the area (for only 2 € you are well informed, in our opinion a must), other documentation, explanations, an exhibition on local fauna, toilets, and so on. Also nice: you can get special rolling carts with very wide tires (the ones you sometimes see at the coast): this allows people who are more difficult to walk to enter the moors relatively easily.

Tip 3: Don't count on having good cell phone reception in and around the moorland. Say sometimes no reception at all. If you still want to communicate, stop by the Tourist Office: they have a free public WiFi access point there 😉.

Tip 4: This is extremely fragile natural area. Best to stay on the provided paths and try to avoid fire in any way possible! There are park rangers walking around who can advise and assist you as well as control you 😉.
