General information about Valenciennes
Valenciennes is not a destination you immediately think of going to. Nevertheless, this northern French city has some assets: ancient streets, art, museums, etc. . A must see is the renovation project of the old hospital. Not only did they create more than 160 apartments there, but also a very nice 4-star Royal Hainaut Spa Resort Hotel. A project of some... 80 M€. Take a walk around it. Inside there is a very large lobby where you can go for cocktails, café gourmands, and so on.
One of the oldest streets, which you definitely must have seen is the Rue des Sayneurs (see photos below). With the help of European subsidies, some buildings there were beautifully renovated, among other things. On the Place d'Armes there is a very large work of art by Jean-Bernard Métais in the shape of a needle. Engraved in it are thousands of words and phrases, all spoken by local Valenciennes residents. People speak of the "Obélisque de Valenciennes" there. At night, to a greater or lesser extent, it is beautifully illuminated. The Musée des Beaux-Arts de Valenciennes, currently closed due to alteration work, contains several large works by the Flemish master painter Rubens.

Tip: Less than 10 kilometers from the center are famous and infamous cobbled lanes of the cycling classic "Paris-Roubaix."For this, go to the town of Waller-Arenberg. Look for the "trouée of Waller-Arenberg." In 2022, this was also the arrival point of the 5th étape of the Tour de France (July 6, 2022).
