General information about the Basilica of Our Lady
The Our Lady Basilica of Boulogne-sur-Mer is a majestic church, say cathedral, stands on the hilltop in the old part of town, near the castle. It dominates the whole city. You can notice it from afar. If you want to take a nice overview photo, go to the very tall monument of Napoleon in Wimille. The building is so big that you really have no choice but to go there if you want to capture the building in its entirety.
The particularly large dome is no less than 85 meters high (inside) and 101 meters outside. It was worked on for about 30 years (period 1827 to 1857) and weighs a whopping 17 million kilograms! There are beautiful frescoes on display that also date from that era. They are systematically deteriorating and people are trying to restore them as much as possible. Still very worthwhile to see what constructions were made back then!
On May 13, 2023, the great dome of the Basilica of Our Lady of Boulogne-sur-Mer reopened to the public after years of renovation.
this cathedral also has a public secret: underground is the largest crypt in France with many murals and also remnants from the time of the Romans. A unique feature.
The church is free to enter, the crypt is paying.
