General information about Belfort van Arras

The Belfry of Arras is one of the most beautiful Flemish Belfries. Like 55 others, it was recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. The tower can be climbed (4.50 EUR in October 2025). From the top you can very nicely see the Place de Héros and the Grand'Place with its typical facades. You can also easily see the Cathedral of Arras from there. Highly recommended!

The Belfry has 3 viewing levels. You can max out to level 1. For that, you first take an elevator and then another metal staircase of 40 steps.

Did you know ... on Saturday, Oct. 18, 2025, someone was spotted at the very top of the Belfry? He was apparently taking photos there 😉 Downright life-threatening! Of course, the action was severely censured by every agency. Read about it in the regional newspaper La Voix du Nord all about it.

Opening hours of the Belfry of Arras

You can climb the Belfry of Arras during the opening hours of the tourist office, which is located at the bottom of the tower. The climb itself can take place up to about 30 minutes before the counter closes and takes approximately 20-40 minutes. The Tourist Office is open almost every day except December 25 and January 1. The Belfry is also closed in bad weather conditions.
These hours can be used as a guideline for opening hours:
Mon-Sat: ~9:30 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. and ~2:00 p.m. – 5:30/6:30 p.m.
Sun: 09:30 – 12:30 and ~14:30 – 18:30

General tips:

2) You can consult our overview lists: by category ( e.g. timeline, size, ...) or by region
3) You can also always consult tourist services: see our overview of tourist services

Tip 1: You can make a full-day program anyway in Arras itself: among other things, you can descend into the marl caves under the Belfry (ask for them at the Tourism Office in the Town Hall - the visit starts in the basement of this town hall) or visit the abbey cum large cathedral of Saint-Vaast / Vedastus.

Tip 2: A great time to visit Arras is around Christmas. Every year, a large and lively Christmas market. Visit in the evening to see all the illuminated facades. It's a beautiful sight! Climb the tower at dusk and admire the magical Christmas market from above.

Tip 3: If you love memory tourism, be sure to visit Career Wellington: in this underground city dug by mostly New Zealand miners, 24,000 soldiers were prepared for a surprise attack on the Germans during World War I. You can also easily combine this visit with, for example, the Canadian Memorial of Vimy, the Anneau de la Mémoire, the Louvre Lens, etc. . All of these are not so far away.

Tip 4: If you like some of the more mundane life, stop by the Gulf of Arras. Beautiful terraces overlooking the golf course.
