General information about Katsberg Abbey

You can see the silhouette of this very old Franco-Flemish Abbey of Kastberg, a Cistercian abbey of Trappists, from afar. It is located at the top of Mount Kats (Mont-des-Cats). They still make abbey cheese there. They no longer breed or milk the cows themselves. It is Danone of Belle who now supplies the regional cow's milk. Making the cheese is the principle livelihood for the abbey. Since June 2011, they have also been marketing a Trappist beer, Mont des Cats. However, this does not receive the "Authentic Trappist Product" logo because it is not brewed on site but in Chimay. It can be tasted at the adjacent inn. There is also a store for tourists, as well as a little church that is open basically every day. This church is well maintained, soberly decorated and equipped with modern(er) stained glass windows. Right in front of the abbey you have a very nice view of the Flemish hills. You can go hiking in the surrounding forest. Near the abbey is also the Chapelle de la Passion. 

Every third Sunday of October, there is normally a great feast of St. Hubert. More than 600 horses are blessed then. Impressive. See also the report on Flandres Télévision and the pictures our Top.Vlaanderen webpage. So you have a good idea of what this event is all about.

To conclude, the abbey has a number of guest rooms, especially for those seeking rest. Did you know that Marshal Ferdinand Foch also sought rest and reflection within the abbey walls during World War I?

Tip 1: we do not recommend visiting this location on Sundays and/or holidays. After all, on such days there is a particularly large crowd. It leads to long(er) waiting times in the inn and abbey store and sometimes parking problems. Choose a weekday and this location comes into its own!

Tip 2: If you are interested in a local local product, then in addition to the store in the abbey, you can also visit the small store right next to the inn. You are often ordered there much faster 😉.
Notice: A reader of top.vlaanderen reported to us in early September 2025 that the little store would be closed.

Tip 3: while you are on site, be sure to visit the base of the particularly tall telecommunications mast. You will be really impressed by the height of this mast! This television mast, about 200 meters high, can be easily seen from the center of Ypres. It is the navigation point for the entire region.
