General information about Flemish Estaminets & Belgian Beer Culture

An "estaminet" is an old Flemish village pub where people gathered after a day of hard labor. They often look rather "brown" inside, wooden furniture, hop cones on the walls and/or ceiling. One drinks mostly local beers and can often get "boerestuuten" (farmer's bread and sandwiches) with either pâté, cheese or ham. By the way, there are other typical dishes one can get there. How about "hemnepot" or "potjesvleesch" (potty meat in "beautiful" Flemish 😉 ). You haven't really visited our region if you haven't visited at least one such estaminet. And while you're there, why not try a "Picon": this is a local aperitif based on orange and herbs.

Some estaminets specialize in offering as many types of beer as possible, preferably regional beers. This (predominantly) keeps Belgian beer culture alive. Belgian Beer Culture has been recognized as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. By the way, in the region you can also visit several local breweries.

Tip 1: Many of these estaminets are packed to capacity on weekends (especially in the evenings). In many cases, you will have to wait until a seat opens up. Perhaps best to reserve a table (if at all possible) or choose another time.

Tip 3: Not directly an estaminet in the strictest sense of the word, but still a prim and proper café where you would drink the best picon in the region (although everyone claims this 😉 ): At Gisèle's in the border village of Houtkerke, France. Gisèle herself has been keeping this picon café open for more than 60 years. Do!

Tip 4: We like to refer to, for example, "De Kauwackers". This estaminet is located in the Flemish Heuvelland. If you are also a lover of beautifully decorated gardens, visit the Estaminet 't Kasteelhof in Kassel (France): authentic, cozy and with panoramic views.
