Les quilles en l'air (Equihen-Plage, France)
Have you ever slept in an overturned boat ? Well, in Equihen-Plage (near Boulogne-sur-mer) you can experience this ancient custom for yourself. In the old days, when fishermen were mostly poor people, they placed a typical boat upside down and used it as a roof. A modest dwelling was then created underneath. Well seen and not too expensive. A typical fishing boat for the Opal Coast was the flobart. When these were shipwrecked, they could still be used as a basis for housing.
At the municipal campsite of the seaside resort of Equihen-Plage you can still rent such a boat, or house, for one or more nights. This can be done for as little as 70 € per night. You can also rent sheets and towels on the spot for a song. A unique experience. Keep in mind that such an accommodation is very small. There are those with one bedroom and those with two bedrooms. From the campsite you have a very nice view of the wide beach from the heights.
Whether you are going to sleep in such a boat or not, Equihen-Plage must be seen if you love a typical fishing village and the raw, original maritime atmosphere and nature. You won't see many tourists there, and that's a good thing. The beach is much nicer than Le Touquet or Hardelot (which everyone always talks about, for some reason).
Take a look at the Belgian real estate project "Domaine Sauvage": there you will find, among others, a number of Belgian companies with their country house(s).
