General information about Catwalk
Today, the Ypres Catwalk is organized only once every three years. Most recently, it took place on Sunday, May 12, 2024. This was the 46th Catwalk. So the next rendezvous will be in 2027.
The parade consists of several dozen wagons, groups, marching bands, and so on whose themes all have something to do with the cat. For example, many sayings involving the cat are depicted. Some 1,560 extras (2024) participate in the Cat Parade. And of course the Ypres giants be allowed to go outside again. The procession follows a mapped out route along which various stands are set up. For 2024, for example, this one looked like this.
At the end of the procession, the City Jester ascends the Belfry and throws down plush cats. On Wikipedia we read, "Initially, the cat throwing would have taken place with the Ascension foor from St. Martin's Church, only to move with the foor in 1476 to 'Cat Wednesday' in the second week of Lent. The location changed to the belfry tower.".
The parade always starts at 3pm and ends about 6pm.
