General information about Viewpoint Saint Nicolas Tower
The Sint-Niklaas Tower viewpoint is a relatively new initiative. The West Flanders provincial government, through its autonomous company Westtoer, has projects underway to strengthen the province's tourism infrastructure. Among other things, it does this through the Horizon 2025 project which aims to make towers, high monuments, etc. accessible to the general public. The agencies that work on this receive a nice subsidy from Westtoer. On Top.Vlaanderen you can also find all Horizon 2025 projects.
For example, since 2021 you can ascend the St. Nicholas Church in Veurne. To do so, you have to climb as many as 214 steps. Fortunately, there are rest stops built in. So you can visit the former bell foundry (sometimes), the carillon, and so on. Your efforts are rewarded by the magnificent 360° panoramic view. On the way up, you have interesting info boards, like this one, for example, about the belfries (recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site).
