The South Abbey Mill (Koksijde, Belgium)
Would you like to see a mill in full operation? As a group you can visit the mill belonging to the Abbey Ten Duinen of Koksijde almost every day by appointment. For individuals, this is possible between April 1 and December 31. In the past, certain monastic orders had to be self-sufficient and therefore had at least one mill. This abbey had two of them at the time. The current mill is not the original one. It dates from 1773 and originally stood in Houtem near Veurne (known as "Molen Lootvoet"). It is a unique three-loft stake mill. The current mill is recognized as a "protected monument". It is run by the only full-time professional miller in Belgium: Kjell Bartholomeus.
Tip #1: If you have a little more time, be sure to visit the museum of the Abbey of the Dunes.
Tip #2: Interested in abbeys and all that goes with them? then we can also visit, for example, the abbey barn Ter Doest (Lissewege, Belgium), or to the impressive Chartreuse Notre-Dame-des-Prés (Neuville-sous-Montreuil, France).
Tip 3: What you should definitely visit someday are "The Gardens of Valloires" (Argoules, France). These are located around the abbey of Valloires.
