General information about Het Duinenhuis & De Sterrenjutters
The Duinenhuis is a nature education center located at the Schipgat Dunes of Koksijde. These are the dunes directly opposite the legendary hotel/restaurant boat "The Normandie" located between Koksijde village and Oostduinkerke village. There is an observation platform on top of the top floor from which you can watch these dunes and the North Sea beyond. A nice viewpoint thus.
The road to the Dunes House is decorated as a "play street." There are also beautiful, playful drawings about the Sun, planets, the cardinal directions and constellations. Original!
The Dunes House regularly hosts exhibitions. Currently one is running on "Antartica." Playfully applied for the children and with beautiful pictures.
On the observing platform you will also find a small observatory of "De Sterrenjutters". There you can regularly learn about the wonders of the universe. In July 2025, a second telescope was also installed directly on the platform. The observatory is kept operational by an enthusiastic team of amateur astronomers from the region. Sometimes they also go out together (whether or not with fellow popular observatories like AstroLAB IRIS for example) to visit museums, scientific institutions, observatories, etc. at home and abroad. Good to know: in the months of July and August, the observatory is open every Thursday evening from 21h. The other months, the observatory is open every 2nd and 3rd Friday of the month. For opening hours and last minute information: consult their website. Finally: every 1st Friday of the month (except July and August) there is a lecture on astronomy, meteorology and related sciences.
Occasionally, performances are organized on the roof of the Dunes House (including the so-called "Shiphole Sessions" that originated in corona times).

Tip 1: Look carefully at the opening hours of the Duinenhuis. They close relatively early in the afternoon (sometimes as early as 4 pm). Know that from then on the observation platform is no longer accessible. We did learn during our visit that there is a project to add a new staircase to the building which will in principle allow one to reach the platform "always" (even if the Duinenhuis will be closed 😉 ). Interesting to go and watch beautiful sunsets, for example. Anyway, for now (in July 2025) this staircase is not there yet.
Tip #2: If you are going there to a performance (e.g. a scientific lecture organized by the Sterrenjutters), or for example a performance, leave on time: as there is no parking at the Duinenhuis itself. So you have to get rid of your car on the nearby main road. That takes time. Also, count on only a 5 to 10 minute walk between this lane and the Duinenhuis.
Tip 3: If you love astronomy, there are several other places to go in Flanders: Ypres, Bruges, Ghent, Antwerp, Grimbergen, and so on. By the way, did you know that the initiator of Top.Vlaanderen is also the president of the Project- and Observatory AstroLAB IRIS (Zillebeke, Ypres)? At all these places you are also welcome to explore the Universe. Do!
